WAP Competition

Competition for WAP protocols can come from several sources, for example the following three:

• SIM Toolkit - Subscriber Identity Module, uses smartcards in wireless devices and is already widely used.
• Windows CE - Operating System from Microsoft for handheld devices is designed o include mobile and other space constranied devices.
• JavaPhone - from Sun Microsystems, includes Java Virtual Machine on handsets, they allow to download extra features and functions.

The advantage of WAP over these technologies are as follows:

• WAP is open standard, vendor independent
• WAP is network-standard independent
• WAP transport mechanism is optimized for wireless data bearers
• WAP applications downloaded from server enable faster service creation and introduction than embedded software.
